Double Dutch Publishing (“we,” “us,” “our”) operates doubledutchpublishing.com, including The Underread search tool, Underread+ subscriptions, the Readers Room, Fiction, Writers Tools, and our newsletter. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and what rights you have over it, no matter where in the world you’re reading this from.
What we collect
Account information. If you create an Underread+ account, we collect your email address and authentication details through our account system (Supabase). If you sign in with Google, we receive the basic profile information Google shares with us for authentication purposes.
Newsletter and email. If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address through Buttondown (our primary list) or Substack. We use this solely to send you the content you signed up for.
Usage data. We use Vercel Analytics to understand how visitors use our site: pages viewed, general location (country/region level), device type, and referral source. This data is aggregated and does not identify you personally.
Purchase and subscription data. If you purchase an Underread+ subscription, physical books, or make a donation, a third-party payment processor handles your payment details directly. We do not store your full card number or banking information ourselves. We retain records of the transaction (amount, date, subscription status) to manage your account.
Affiliate link data. When you click a “Buy on Amazon” link from our site, Amazon may set its own tracking cookie as part of the Amazon Associates program, which we participate in. We do not control or access what Amazon does with that data; see Amazon’s own privacy policy for details.
Why we collect it
We use your information to: operate and improve the site; deliver the content and services you sign up for (newsletter, Underread+ features, saved reading history); process transactions; understand aggregate usage patterns; and communicate with you about your account or purchases.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties, and we never will.
Who we share it with
We share information only with the service providers that make the site work: Supabase (account authentication and data storage), Vercel (hosting and analytics), Buttondown and Substack (email delivery), and, once selected, a payment processor for Underread+ subscriptions. Each of these providers processes data under their own privacy and security practices, and we choose providers that maintain industry-standard protections.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect our legal rights.
Cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies for authentication (keeping you signed in), analytics (understanding site usage), and affiliate tracking (Amazon Associates, as described above). You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling them may affect some site functionality, such as staying signed in.
Your rights
Regardless of where you live, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate information.
- Delete your account and associated data.
- Export your data in a portable format.
- Object to or restrict certain uses of your data.
- Withdraw consent for optional communications (such as the newsletter) at any time, via the unsubscribe link in any email.
If you are in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, these rights are guaranteed under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). If you are a California resident, you have equivalent rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what data we collect and to request its deletion; as noted above, we do not sell personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of on that front. Wherever else you’re reading from, we apply this same standard of rights as a matter of policy, not just legal obligation.

Children’s privacy
Our site, including Double Dutch Kids content, is intended for a general and adult audience with respect to account creation and data collection. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the relevant age of digital consent in your jurisdiction) through account sign-ups or the newsletter. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
International data transfers
Our service providers may process and store data in countries other than your own, including the United States. By using our site, you understand your information may be transferred to and processed in such countries, which may have different data protection laws than your home country.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We’ll update the “Last updated” date above when we do. Continued use of the site after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
