Submission guide

What we publish, what we don't, and exactly how to send it.

What we publish

We're sensibility-first, not genre-first. We read everything ourselves and take on only what we can't stop thinking about. If it surprises us, we keep reading.

  • Literary and upmarket fiction with a voice we could pick out of a lineup.
  • Smart narrative non-fiction — business, finance, big ideas — that doesn't read like a textbook.
  • Anthologies and short fiction with a unifying spine.
  • Children's picture books with genuine strangeness and heart (for Double Dutch Kids).

What we don't

Nothing here is a judgment on the work — only on fit. A 'no' from us is never a verdict on your writing.

  • Genre series fiction (straight romance, cozy mystery, doorstop epic fantasy) — wonderful, just not our shelf.
  • Work where we can't picture the reader — if there's no 'for readers of X and Y,' it's likely not for us yet.
  • Anything with AI-generated text as the primary work.
  • First drafts. Revise until it is the best version you can make alone, then send it.

How to send it

Put everything in one document where you can, and submit through our form (link below). Please include:

  • A short query: what it is, who it is for, and a line about you.
  • A synopsis — one page is plenty.
  • The first 25 pages for fiction, or a proposal plus a sample chapter for non-fiction. For picture books, the full manuscript.

What happens next

We read every submission ourselves, which takes time but means a real person meets your pages. Our typical response window is about 1 week. If you have not heard from us by then, a gentle nudge is always welcome.

We can't offer line-by-line feedback on passes — small team, a lot of pages — but if we ask for the full manuscript, it means we are genuinely excited and want to keep reading.

Money, rights, and the fine print

Money flows one direction here: from readers to writers, never the other way. We will never ask you to pay to be read, published, promoted, or reviewed.

If we offer to publish, we will walk you through rights and terms in plain language before anything is signed. No rights grabs, no perpetual contracts, no fine print designed to trip you up. You keep your copyright, we license your work for a fixed term, and you earn royalties on every sale.
